HST 602 The History of Modern Propaganda

This course examines the role of propaganda, starting with its use by religious reformers in the 16th century, French revolutionaries of the 18th, and nationalists in the 19th. The main focus, however, is the period after 1900. We explore propaganda during the two world wars, its use by totalitarian powers, and its impact on the Cold War. We place emphasis on studying the raw materials of propaganda: pamphlets, posters, radio broadcasts, and films. UL Lect: 3 hrs. Course Weight: 1.00 Billing Units: 1
