HIS 778 The European Reformation

The Reformation saw the splitting of the western Christian church into the two great divisions that continue today: Roman Catholic and Protestant. This course examines the reasons for this final break after centuries of reform and limited accommodation, and pursues the further shattering of the reform movement into its multiple sects and churches. It emphasizes the social, economic, gender, and political effects of the Reformation and the terrible wars that emanated from this crisis. Lect: 3 hrs.
