This course examines the development of British society and culture from 1939 to the present day. We discuss the Second World War as the “People’s War” before turning to social and cultural developments in postwar Britain, particularly affluence and consumerism, immigration and questions of national identity, the rise of youth cultures and popular music, Thatcherism, and contemporary society since New Labour’s “New Britain.” UL Lect: 3 hrs.
