Modern society depends profoundly on scientific knowledge, but the critical investigation of nature began in ancient times. Students explore how social context, aesthetics, cultural preferences, needs, and experience led the pioneers of science, from Aristotle to Newton, to reject earlier explanations and construct new understandings of the earth and the universe, biology, and medicine. While highlighting the Greek scientific tradition in Europe and Islam, this course also encompasses Chinese and other science. Lect: 3 hrs. Antirequisite: HST 325 Course Weight: 1.00 Billing Units: 1
