HIS 854 African-American History

The African-American experience spans 400 years, beginning with the forced migration of Africans to colonial America. With an emphasis on Black political thought and social action, this course examines how African-Americans sustained themselves through 250 years of racial slavery and subsequent Jim Crow segregation in the 20th century. It explores Black Americans’ ongoing struggle for racial equality through organized movements, community building, and the development of unique cultural and social traditions. Lect: 3 hrs.
