HIS 788 Modern France

This course provides an introduction to French society, politics, and culture since the Revolution of 1789. Topics include: the impacts of the revolution and France’s revolutionary heritage; growing industrialization and urbanization; relations between church, monarchy, and state; French imperialism; and the consequences of the two world wars. The course concludes with discussion of the legacies of decolonization and immigration, urban culture, race, politics, and class relations in contemporary France. Lect: 3 hrs.
