HST 522 The Middle East: 1908 to the Present

This course surveys the history of the Middle East from the eve of the First War to the present. Important topics include the role of colonial powers in the region, the development of modern Middle Eastern societies and nation states, cooperation and conflict among the region’s countries, the impact of the Cold War, Arab-Israeli conflict, the Palestinian question, the roots of political Islam, and the Middle East’s place in the wider world.
