HIS 737 The Child in History

Rather than a chronological history of childhood, this course explores contemporary themes (mainly in Canada) from various perspectives. How have concerns with children’s protection, health, education, and welfare been expressed throughout the 20th century? How have child protection advocates linked cruelty to children with juvenile delinquency? Why has single parenthood traditionally assumed such commanding importance in the context of child welfare? How have foster care and adoption transformed state regulation of family life? (Formerly HST 508). Lect: 3 hrs. Course Weight: 1.00 Billing Units: 1
