BDC 925 Issues in Popular Culture

Cellphones. Fandom. Shopping Malls. Blogging. These are just some case studies that may be examined. Using communications theory, cultural studies and discourse analysis, we will explore popular culture in its roles as shaper of national identity, as gendered discourse, as tool for interactivity. Particular emphasis will be on digital media and its relation to celebrity, gender, and community. Lectures supplemented with TV clips, films, online materials, and media art. Lect: 3 hrs.
