Students examine diversity in race, ethnicity and culture within Canadian society and move toward an understanding of how these factors shape family values, family forms, child rearing and parenting practices, and family expectations for their children. They examine the potential for conflicting expectations between families and educators/caregivers from the dominant culture. Concepts of race, racism, and ethnic relations are studied in the context of globalization, migration, refugee and settlement experiences. Policies, practices and legislation on immigration and settlement are also examined. Students engage with a family in the community as part of the course. (Formerly ECE 302). Lect: 3 hrs.
