PHL 808 Language and Philosophy

This course will examine philosophical issues regarding both the nature of language and the relation of language to other matters. The first group includes topics such as: What distinguishes linguistic communication from other types of communication? How do metaphors work? In what ways is language rule-governed? The latter group might include: How are thought and language related? How is language related to gender? To personal identity? To rationality or reason? UL Lect: 3 hrs.
