PHL 501 Social Thought and the Critique of Power

What is power, and who really holds it in contemporary society? Is our government’s power over us legitimate, and what are its proper limits? Do democracies really succeed in giving power to ordinary people? When is it right for citizens to rebel against the powers that be? Such questions and others will be addressed by way of a study of some of the great social and political philosophers of the modern world. UL Lect: 3 hrs. Course Weight: 1.00 Billing Units: 1
