This course focuses on emerging legal problems associated with the growth of information technology in Canada and internationally. It focuses on the legal protection of electronic information and technology through patents, copyright, trademarks and trade secrets, and upon contractual issues (electronic signatures, problems of verification, contracts which must be in writing, and security of information) in the procurement of products and services, especially through the Internet and other e-commerce conduits. A range of other topics, such as data protection and privacy, the regulation of the Internet, the harmonization of law globally, computer crime, and remedies will be discussed.
