JRN 120 The Culture of News

An introduction to the core values of journalism and the fundamental tools of reporting. Students learn the basics of news judgment, research, reporting and writing, including interviewing techniques, verification methods, lead writing, and story organization. They come to understand fundamental ethical considerations and essential reporting tools through news writing assignments and reporting exercises. They learn how to place and evaluate this work in the context of the business and professional environment in which journalists operate. The course also examines the role of journalism in society, changing technologies that affect journalism, and changing public perceptions of the news media. Lect: 2 hrs./Lab: 4 hrs.
