FRE 516 Politics and Play in French Poetry

Writers have used poetic discourse to express desire, convey melancholia, to play, challenge authority and affirm identity. Through a thematic approach, this course intends to introduce students to the concepts, methods and problems of literary analysis through the study of French and Francophone poetry from the Medieval to the contemporary period. Students will be introduced to rhetorical devices, themes, historical and social context, which help the modern reader understand textual and authorial intent. UL Lect: 3 hrs.
