ENG 703 Popular Literatures

Students will learn to recognize and identify different conventions defining genres of popular literature such as romance and sensation; gothic and horror; and melodrama. The course will explore the relationship between texts and audiences, and how readers assign meaning to and make use of what they read. Students will study the origins of today’s popular genres in books and other media and the sociocultural values embodied in such works. Lect: 3 hrs.
