ENG 633 19C Literature and Culture II

Modernism, the neogothic, the Decadent Movement, cinema, the telephone, the typewriter, sexology, psychology – the second half of the nineteenth century invented much that continues to influence us. Focussing on the British context, this course addresses ways in which this era used literature and other cultural works to shape and respond to changing social conditions, ideologies, and media. Possible topics include the women’s movement, consumer culture, class conflicts, socialism, imperialism, and developments in visual culture and publishing. Lect: 3 hrs.
