What does it mean for a novel to tell its story in the form of a picaresque, an epistolary exchange, or as speculative or experimental fiction? This course offers an in-depth exploration of the novel in its many genres, drawing examples from different historical periods, cultural traditions, and literary movements. In addition to studying theoretical approaches to the novel, students examine how writers have developed and responded to its generic conventions. Lect: 3 hrs.
